The Finished Work of the Cross PDF Print E-mail

images"And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace." (Rom 11:6)

The finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross is the basis of our salvation by grace. It is a work that had been concealed until the cross and ended with Jesus' death, right after He proclaimed, "It is finished!" (John 19:30).

This work is perfect and complete. The sinner accesses this finished work, in full, at the time of personal belief (Rom 5:2) and cannot add nor subtract from it in any way. Therefore, God is completely and perfectly PROPITIATED by Christ's shed blood; the sinner is completely and perfectly REDEEMED from sin; and is completely and perfectly RECONCILED to God at the time of personal belief.

Propitiation (the perfect and complete solution for the offended holiness of God)

A definition of propitiation: The offering of a gift or sacrifice of sufficient value in order that the wrath of another might be fully satisfied.

"And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world." (1Jn 2:2)

God is just and the law demands that the punishment for sin is death (Rom 6:23). Propitiation solves the problem of an offended God. The death of Christ exhausted God’s anger toward a sinful world and averted His wrath. His wrath has been turned into pleasure and God could no longer find the reason to continue in anger, thereby, enabling Him to receive into His family those who place their faith in Jesus Christ.

Christ died ONCE (Heb 9:28), perfectly and completely satisfied God’s anger toward our past, present and future sins.

Redemption (the perfect and complete solution for sin)

"Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith" (Gal 3:13-14)

He did this by perfectly keeping the law, fulfilling it, and paying its curse (Mt 5:17; Gal 3:13). The law brought a "blessing" if obeyed or a "curse" if disobeyed. ANY failure to obey the law brought on the curse (Dt 28:15-68). Therefore, EVERYONE was under the curse (Dt 28:22) for all have sinned (Rom 3:23). Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by bearing our curse for us. The Greek word for "redeem" used here is EXAGORAZO and means "to buy OUT OF the slave market." By dying on the cross, our Lord paid sin's penalty in full and bought us out of the system of the law.

The blessing of Abraham comes to the believer on account of righteousness imputed by faith in Jesus and His finished work, apart from self worth. This entitles believers to receive the Holy Spirit through faith. (Gal 3:5-14)

We are dead to the law through the body of Christ. (Rom 7:4) This system of the law, of obedience to satisfying the demands of the 10 commandments, was then superseded by grace (Rom 6:14), with an emphasis on living by faith. When believers die to the law, it no longer has authority over them. Paul said, "There is, therefore, now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus" (Rom 8:1).

Reconciliation (the perfect and complete solution for the sinner)

"That is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation." (2Co 5:19)

The Greek root "katalasso" basically means to change completely. Reconciliation can also be looked at as an accounting term with the basic idea of 'causing to be conformed to, adjusted to, a specific norm or standard'.

Jesus has changed the believer completely by becoming sin so that we can become the righteousness of God in Him (2Co 5:21). God no longer imputes our sins to us because He has imputed them to Jesus on the cross. Christ has made us acceptable to God, no longer enemies, by giving us the gift of righteousness (Romans 5). We have become a new creation in Christ (2Co 5:17) and are adopted into the family of God as sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus (Gal 3:26). And if we are sons, then we are heirs of God through Christ. (Gal 4:7)

Therefore, as through one man's offense (the first Adam) judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man's righteous act (the last Adam - Jesus Christ) the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous. (Rom 5:18-19)

The Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) was pioneered by Hudson Southwell together with two fellow missionaries Frank Davidson and Carey Tolley of Australia. They boarded an old cargo steamer from Melbourne in early October 1928 bound for Singapore. Travelling with them was Alexander Henderson, a pioneer of the Southeast Asian timber trade who had offered to help establish a base on the island of Borneo. Henderson left the team the following year.

On 12th November 1928, Southwell and Henderson landed in Kuching, Borneo. They were referred to the Rajah's private secretary, Gerard MacBryan and the Rajah's cousin and legal adviser Charles Willes Johnson. The Rajah gave permission to establish a mission in Sarawak and recommended starting in the Limbang area to the north-east. Davidson and Tolley were to join them later.

The historical setting then was the regime of the White Rajahs in Sarawak that began with the English adventurer and explorer James Brooke who set out for Borneo in 1839. His nephew Charles Johnson Brooke succeeded him in 1868. The third Rajah was Charles Vyner Brooke who ruled from 1917. The era of the White Rajahs came to an end on 1st July 1946 when Sarawak became a crown colony.

Sarawak, together with Sabah and the Federation of Malayan States came together and formed Malaysia in 1963. With the increasing use of the Malaysian national language, Borneo Evangelical Church soon became Sidang Injil Borneo or more commonly known as S.I.B. Today, S.I.B. churches may be found in Sabah and Peninsula Malaysia besides Sarawak.

The early 1980's witnessed a significant revival in Kuching through the Charismatic Renewal Movement. Many Christians went back to church and found new meaning in their faith. By the turn of the new century and millennia, a generation of believers had come of age. Youth Fellowship members saw friends getting married. Sunday school juniors were now in college while some had graduated and working. During this time some churches grew and matured while others experienced decline.

In September 2001, Crossway, a new Christian Bookstore opened at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Kuching. The ensuing months saw many previous church acquaintances meet up once again and started fellowshipping at the bookstore café around the subject of 'Grace'. Many cassettes carrying sermons and bible teachings by Ps. Joseph Prince of New Creation Church, Singapore had circulated that fired a refreshing understanding of the New Covenant. This quickly became known as 'The Grace Message'. Many who were no longer attending church or had left ministry came back to regular fellowship. They were awed once again by the love of God. The meaning of the completed work of Jesus on the cross and His grace for every believer profoundly changed the previous mindset and belief system that tried to please God by own efforts.

Before long Alex Choo and Thomas Jacques came to the conclusion that a new church is in the offing to contain this new wine. Their friends John Koe of Frontierworks and Anthony Lau, who attends New Creation Church, also shared this. Lau had met Koe by divine providence through a taxi driver and learnt of Koe's mission in China. When the thought of meeting up in Kuching came up to evaluate the situation and to test whether a new church was the right thing, there was tremendous agreement all round.

Eventually Jacques obtained permission from SIB Olive Garden to start a Preaching Point at Upper Room, a function hall above Crossway Bookstore. By then, Choo was very much charged up spiritually. He had earlier led a Youth Fellowship for 14 years but eventually ran out of joy. The Preaching Point was launched on 30th June 2002 after a Gospel Concert Rally called 'Hunger D'experience' where Koe preached and many accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Prior to this, Koe had spoken at Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship meetings paving the way for systematic teaching on the grace of God. Pastors Joshua Lee and Henry Yeo of New Creation Church also came to Kuching and helped prepare potential members and leaders with their seminars and foundation stone classes.

The Preaching Point continued and was commissioned SIB Grace on 7th December 2003 with Thomas Jacques transferred as Elder from SIB Olive Garden to SIB Grace. Alex Choo was inducted as Elder on 18th January 2004 at SIB Grace.
